There are a lot of reasons you can develop a leak in the roof of your home. The leak is often because a shingle is loose or has been damaged by wind, tree limbs, or ice building up on the roof. The roof repair is usually straightforward if you can find an experienced roofer to help you.
Missing Shingles
Roofs that are covered in asphalt shingles are incredibly durable, but occasionally a shingle can come loose, and the gap that it leaves can allow water to work in under the other shingles on the roof. Once the water gets under the shingles, it will find a gap in the wood and the roof will eventually start leaking.
The simple solution is to have a roof repair contractor come and replace the shingle and check for any other loose ones while they are on the roof. Asphalt shingles can crack, and the edges of them will often roll up as they get old. If there are any that look loose or have edge damage, the contractor will replace them for you.
Many times if one shingle comes loose, the shingles around it may also be loose and ready to come off, but the roof repair contractor will check the shingles for you and replace any that are damaged, even if they are still in place on the roof.
Damage Under the Shingles
If the roof has been leaking into the house, the plywood under the roofing material probably has damage as well as the shingles. If the shingles are bad and there is rot or damage to the plywood, you may not be able to simply repair the damage. You may have to replace the entire roof with a new one.
Once the roof repair contractor starts inspecting the damage on the roof, they will be better able to let you know if repair is possible. If you are looking at a roof replacement, the cost is going to be higher, but if it stops the leaks and damage that is occurring under the shingles, it could save you money in the long run.
If you discover your roof leak in the wintertime, you may be able to get the contractor to patch the leak, and then in the spring, come back and do the roof repair work for you. Stripping the roof off your home in the winter is not the best idea unless you live in a climate that does not have snow or cold weather during the winter.
